July 25th, 2003:
Change of Command aboard the USCGC Katherine Walker (WLM 552)

A Change of Command took place on the USCGC Katherine Walker (WLM 552) during the morning of July 25th, 2003. Former CO LCDR Steve Wittrock was honored in a ceremony held under the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, under a beautiful sunny sky. In attendance were the officers and crew of the USCG Katherine Walker, a number of US Coast Guard officers and representatives, as well as US Coast Guard Auxilliary. Among Coast Guard officers present was Captain Mark Landry, First Coast Guard District Operations, who provided the introductory remarks immediately following the National Anthem and the invocation (provided by Pastor Triffel Felske, St. John's Lutheran Church).

Also attending were friends and family of both LCDR Wittrock and of the new CO, LT Brian J. Donahue. Several members of the Navy League from both Central Jersey Council and North Jersey Council were also present to bid farewell to a good friend of the Navy League LTCR Wittrock, but also to welcome LT Donahue and begin a whole new chapter of friendship and support between The Navy League and the Katie Walker!

Our Council's SVP, Dan Dermer, made a presentation to outgoing CO LCDR Wittrock of a rendering of the USCG Katherine Walker. This was donated by North Jersey member Nat Ostrow, and we thank Nat for his continuing support. Dan also presented the new CO LT Donahue with a Central Jersey Council ball cap as a symbol of our ongoing support.

As always the Coast Guard were tremendous hosts and we thank them for extending the invitation to allow us to participate in this event.
