4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION NWS EARLE COMMAND PICNIC

Early on Tuesday July 4th, Council members Bill Ait-ken, Dan Dermer, Neil Gallo and Monty Zaks boarded the USCGC Sailfish for a long day's journey. Along with plenty of food, the members got underway as the cutter escorted a Macy's fireworks barge thru back channels and estuary's into New York Harbor. Once on station the members prepared the food that was provided by the Council. This food was not only provided to the crew of the Sailfish but to almost 40 members of the Boston MSST (Marine Safety and Security Teams) crews providing security. Bags full of chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and sodas were provided to each of the teams as they took barely a few moments to pull alongside the cutter and "grab it to go". The CO of the Sailfish, LTJG Nick Tabori, indicated that if not for the generousity of the Central Jersey Council, the MSST crews would have just gone without any refreshments until the nights work was done. Although busy providing harbor security, the crew, most of whom never saw the Macy's fireworks, were able to spend a few minutes being wowed by the display overhead. Very late in the evening the Sailfish was released from the scene and started back to Sandy Hook. Unlike the slow trip to New York Harbor, the return trip took less time. All of the crew were grateful for the food and refreshments provided by the Council as well as those members who prepared it.

NWS EARLE COMMAND PICNIC

On Friday, July 28, 2006 NWS Earle held its annual Command Picnic. This yearly event provides a much needed outlet for fun, games and food for all who attend. Hamburgers were prepared over a hot smokey grill by the CO are just some of the many sights that can be seen. A DJ provides music and fun activities for the base personnel's children. This year the Central Jersey Council was able to sponsor the DJ. The members of the Council who attended were also able to witness the XO in the dunking booth as well as hard fought matches in the horseshoe pits. A good time was had by all at this big family oriented event.

Bainbridge Island Change of Command

On Wednesday, July 12, 2006 the Council bid goodbye to LCDR Peter Van Ness, CO of the Bainbridge Island. The formal ceremony took place at Sandy Hook Station and was presided over by the new CO of Sector NY, Captain Robert O' Brien. LCDR Van Ness heads to Washington DC and becomes part of the military staff assigned to the White House Press Corps. He was relieved by LT Michael Sinclair. Both officers are veterans of the Persian Gulf prior to taking the helm of the Bainbridge Island. During the ceremonies, LCDR Van Ness thanked the Central Jersey Council for its continued support and dedication to the ship's crew. He also thanked the Central Jersey Council for hosting the Change of Command Ceremonies and for providing the refreshments afterwards. As a token of appreciation a ceramic plaque of the Bainbridge Island was presented to Dan Dermer. As is customary, the Council presented an original water colored painting of the Bainbridge Island to the outgoing CO and a new CJNLUS Ballcap to the incoming CO. We wish LCDR Van Ness, his wife and new baby daughter best wishes in all of their future endeavors. We also welcome LT Sinclair and his wife to the Central Jersey Council family.
