FLEET WEEK 2007

This year the Central Jersey Council had the opportunity to be on board the USS Wasp during the Parade of Ships into NY Harbor. Captain Robert O’Brian, CO of Coast guard Sector New York invited Council members, William Aitken, Dan Dermer, Dick Ehlert, Steve Hutton and Frank Greco, to take part in this event. During the visit, the members were able to meet many US Marines and Navy personnel and see all of their equipment. The Council was also treated to a full tour of the Marine Corps amphibious assault aircraft carrier. They also had the opportunity to meet and have their pictures taken with singer George Clinton on board the ship.

After a wonderful lunch on board, all guests were invited topside to see flyovers of various aircraft. While viewing the flyovers, our members were able to see George Clinton greeting as many members of the crew as he could while they were manning the rails. It was a pleasant surprise to see him take so much time with our soldiers and sailors, signing autographs and taking pictures with all of them. A heartfelt Bravo Zulu to him for that kind gesture.

MEMORIAL DAY 2007
On Saturday May 26, 2007 the Council presented a wreath during the remembrance ceremonies held at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Military Cemetery. This yearly event is attended by many important public figures as well as many military personnel. The keynote address was given by State Assemblyman Jack Conners in lieu of Governor Jon Corzine. Afterwards, Past Council President Dan Dermer presented a wreath on behalf of all New Jersey Navy League Councils. The wreath was donated to the Council by Dan and Jack Dermer.
COUNCIL BIDS FAREWELL TO CAPTAIN GRAHAM
On June 29, 2007, Senior Vice President Frank Greco bid farewell to Captain Scott Graham, Deputy Commander of Coast Guard Sector New York. The change of command and retirement ceremony was a great experience as they saw the official close of an outstanding Coast Guard career. Flanked by his Commanding Officer Captain Robert O’Brien, other officers, friends and his wife, Captain Graham’s final remarks were warm and moving.

The Central Jersey Council wishes him fair winds and following seas as he enters a well deserved retirement. His relief and the new Deputy commander is Captain Michael Gardner. He has indicated his desire to strengthen and expand the friendship between Sector New York and the Council. We welcome him and his family to the Northeast and wish him well in his new assignment. Be sure to attend the October Dinner Meeting so you can personally welcome Captain Gardner into the family of the Central Jersey Council.

COUNCIL BIDS FAREWELL TO CAPTAIN GRAHAM
Early on Wednesday July 4th 2007, Council members William Aitken, Christine Aaron, Dan Dermer, Dick Ehlert, Frank Greco, and Janie Komssi boarded the USCGC Katherine Walker for a long day of work.
