Around the Council......
4TH OF JULY (continued from page 2)
thank this individual(s). The Council members “took over” the galley in order to relieve the food service petty officers of the job of preparing food for the crew and guests numbering almost 150 persons. Besides other Coast Guard personnel, this trip included only the families of the crew.

The prepared food was also provided to almost 40 members of the Marine Safety and Security Teams who provided additional security. Bags full of hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and sodas were provided to each of the teams as they took barely a few moments to pull alongside the cutter and “grab it to go”. The Commanding Officer of the Katherine Walker, Lt. Amy Florentino, indicated that if not for the generosity of the Central Jersey Council, the MSST crews would have just gone without any refreshments until the nights work was done.

Although busy providing a sector command post and harbor security, the crew, most of whom never saw the Macy’s fireworks, were able to spend a time with their families as they watched the display overhead. All of the crew and their families were grateful for the food and refreshments provided by the Council as well as those members who prepared it.

NWS EARLE COMMAND PICNIC:
On Friday July 20, 2007 NWS Earle held its annual Command Picnic. This yearly event provides a much needed outlet for fun, games and food for all who attend. Hamburgers prepared over a hot smokey grill by the CO are just some of the many sights that can be seen. A DJ provided music and fun activities for the base personnel’s children. This year the Central Jersey Council was able to sponsor the DJ. The members of the Council who attended were also able to witness Captain Maynard and his senior staff in the dunking booth, as well as hard fought matches in the horseshoe pits. A good time was had by all at this big family oriented event.
SEA CADETS:
Since our last newsletter many things have been happening with our Sea Cadets. In February both the BB-62 Division and Aegis Division had their annual inspections. The BB-62 received a score of over 3.0 an earned a certificate of merit. The Aegis Division received a score of 3.5 and earned the distinction of Honor Company (the highest certificate a unit can achieve for its inspection). Bravo Zulu to all.

In February, PO1 Myles of the BB-62 Division was promoted to the rank of chief (CPO). The highest rank a cadet can earn in the Sea Cadets. On February 17, 2007, CPO Myles was presented with an Honorary One Year membership in the Navy League by our Council President Richard V. Ehlert. CPO Myles is also the son of the Division’s XO, Ensign Bart Myles. Bravo Zulu to CPO Myles and his proud father on this achievement.

On April 13-15, 2007, the Aegis Division, BB-62 Division and Trenton Division will be participating in a joint drill at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

CHANGE OF COMMAND FOR USCGC BAINBRIDGE ISLAND:

On Monday July 30, 2007, the Council bid goodbye to Lt. Michael Sinclaire the Commanding Officer of the USCGC Bainbridge Island. The formal ceremony took place at Sandy Hook Station and was presided over by the CO of Sector New York Captain Robert O’Brian. Lt. Michael Sinclaire now heads to Philadelphia PA, to attend Law School at Temple University. He was relieved by Lt. Eric J. Matthies.

Both officers were veterans of Persian Gulf service in the US Coast Guard prior to taking the helm of the Bainbridge Island. During the ceremonies, Lt. Sinclaire thanked the Central Jersey Council for its continued support and dedication to the ship’s crew.

As is customary, the Council presented an original water colored painting of the Bainbridge Island to the outgoing CO and a new CJCNLUS ballcap to the incoming CO.

We wish Lt. Sinclaire, his wife and new baby daughter best wishes in all of their future endeavors. We also welcome Lt. Matthies.and his wife to the Central Jersey Council’s family.
